January is here and with it brings a new happiness project goal: working on my social media outlets. It’s time to amp up the tweets, pics, statuses, and pins. I figured what better month to work on this than snowy, cold, wintery January? Let me just tell you we are drowning in snow drifts. Boots are part of my everyday attire and I’m layering like a crazy person.

We are turnin’ the tables [DJ what what?!] today and I’m asking you, yeah YOU some questions.

How do you balance your social media accounts? Do you favor one form over another? Confession: I know I’m a bigger fan of twitter/pinterest than I am of facebook. Do you have any tried and true tips you would like to share? How much is too much? How much sharing is enough?

I know you social media geniuses can help me out!

I personally enjoy Twitter and Pinterest way more than Facebook. (In fact, I’m planning on deactivating my Facebook when I graduate next spring.) I’ve seen a lot of success in working primarily with Twitter though. My main tip would be to share throughout the day, and share with a different caption. For example, today you could share this post and at first say “It’s time for social media …” then later you could say “I’m looking for some tips on social media..”

The different captions will bring in people who maybe wouldn’t have clicked through on the other, and posting throughout the day will reach everyone in different time zones.

When you’re thinking about social media you have to think (I’m assuming, for you!), where are your customers interacting? I always like the 80/20 rule. 80% professional, 20% personal… showing off personality helps! I have tried MANY new local CNY businesses because of their twitter or blog accounts (I wouldn’t have found them otherwise!). Also – strategize. What do you want to get out of social media? New customers, or awareness?! Once you know what you want you can go forward with a plan and use resources (like how you did this blog post :)!)

(As far as your question from the comment above… I wouldn’t schedule tweets. If some tragedy (i.e. Sandy Hook<3) happens, and your tweet goes out about something COMPLETELY different, it will feel inauthentic and startling to your audience. It's better to plan some things but keep them nearby and tweet them as you see fit instead of using something, like Hootsuite, to schedule it for you, in my opinion!

    • Tracy – this is SO helpful. Thank you for taking the time out. I’m definitely trying to come up with a strategic plan for 2013 and be less hap-hazard about all of this. I haven’t heard of the 80/20 rule and that makes a TON of sense to me. Thanks for your insight!

I’m still not sold on pinterest. I like it and I use it, but I don’t think I’m doing it right. I really just use it to save things I like. It’s not important to me whether people repin my stuff. So… then I am definitely doing it wrong. :)

    • Alyssa – I LOVE pinterest…it’s kinda hard to keep that under control. I created a couple of “boards” for my specific posts and I pin the pictures I use for my blog onto these specific boards. If someone clicks that pin it brings them to my blog which drives more traffic. I’m sure I can learn to use it way more effectively but so far that’s been pretty helpful. It’s also great for any type of collaboration blog posts.

I love that in theory. I guess I just feel weird about it in practice. I don’t know. I love getting directed to other people’s blog posts, but I’m conflicted. :/

So I would have to say when it comes to social twitter is my favorite. I do a combination of scheduling and real-time. I work full time and it just isn’t realistic to not-schedule stuff. Otherwise I would only be able to post in the evening which doesn’t seem to be a great time for me. I sit at a computer so I can always go edit it if I need to.

Facebook is hard for me, with their new algorithms, hardly any of your fans actually see your posts so it makes interaction really hard. I love it for groups.

Pinterest is where the majority of my traffic comes from but it’s interesting because it when someone else pins something of mine.

I would say overall I think it is just so important to reply, to tweets, comments, etc… But you are very good at that so I’m not telling you anything new :)
