How to Attach a Headboard to a Platform Bed

Updated on · By the Bedside Sign team

To attach a headboard to a platform bed, match its mounting style to the frame: bolt it to compatible frame brackets, or secure it to the wall if it is designed for wall mounting. Check the manuals, align the holes, and tighten fasteners evenly.

To attach a headboard to a platform bed, connect it to compatible frame brackets or mount it to the wall as designed. Check the frame and headboard instructions, line up the mounting holes, and tighten the fasteners evenly.

The key is matching the parts before assembly. Some platform frames have headboard attachment points; others need a compatible bracket kit or a wall-mounted headboard.

How do you attach a headboard to a platform bed?

Check for mounting holes on both the bed frame and the headboard first. If the holes line up, use the fasteners and brackets specified in the instructions.

  1. Move the mattress and bedding out of the work area.
  2. Find the headboard mounting points on the platform frame.
  3. Check the headboard instructions for its required mounting style.
  4. Position the headboard and align its holes with the frame brackets.
  5. Insert the correct bolts and tighten them evenly.
  6. Check that the headboard feels secure before replacing the mattress.

Ask someone to help hold a large or heavy headboard upright while you fit the hardware. Keep fingers clear of the joints as you tighten the bolts.

What should you check before choosing brackets?

Confirm that the frame can accept a separate bracket kit and that the headboard has matching holes. Compare the mounting width and hole spacing with the hardware instructions before you buy.

Some kits use slotted brackets to adjust the width or distance between the frame and headboard. That adjustability can help with alignment, but it doesn't make every kit fit every bed.

Does your platform bed have headboard mounting points?

Look at the frame's head end for bolt holes or brackets. If you can't find attachment points, check the bed manual or contact the manufacturer before drilling or adding hardware.

A bed with a low profile or upholstered sides may have a different attachment design from a metal frame. Our guide to upholstered platform beds covers common frame styles.

Does the headboard have pre-drilled holes?

Measure the distance between the headboard holes and compare it with the bracket positions. Some bracket kits require holes in the headboard, and their instructions may specify drilling if holes are missing or misaligned.

Don't drill until you have checked the headboard material, its instructions, and the intended bolt size. If you're unsure where a hole can safely go, ask the headboard manufacturer.

Which bracket kit may fit a metal bed frame?

Choose a bracket kit only after checking that the frame and headboard match its mounting requirements. The Suemoss kit includes adjustable headboard brackets, footboard extension brackets, hardware, and tools.

The Suemoss brackets have multiple slots for width and distance adjustments. The kit is designed for headboards with 2 pre-drilled holes; its instructions call for 2/5-inch holes if you need to drill.

Skip this kit if your bed has no way to accept separate brackets or the headboard's material and hole positions don't work with its instructions. Check the frame and headboard measurements before starting.

How do you install an adjustable headboard bracket kit?

Attach the brackets to the frame first, then line up the headboard and tighten the connection. Follow the kit's assembly order and use only the hardware supplied or specified for your frame.

The Colinktool kit includes 2 headboard brackets, screws, and a wrench. Its instructions say to check whether the adjustable bed has built-in brackets, whether the base can fit separate brackets, and whether the headboard holes match.

Colinktool describes multiple slots for adjusting mounting width and distance. Its instructions also call for 2/5-inch holes if the headboard has none and drilling is appropriate for its material.

Tighten the frame-side connections before fastening the headboard. Recheck each joint after assembly, and stop if a bolt binds or the bracket twists out of line.

For the rest of the assembly process, see how to put a platform bed together.

What if the headboard holes don't line up?

Pause and check the bracket adjustment range before making changes to the headboard. Slotted brackets may allow some movement, but the bolts still need to pass through the intended mounting holes without forcing the parts.

Loosen the bracket bolts slightly if the instructions allow it, adjust the spacing, then retighten each side evenly. Don't enlarge holes or use a longer bolt as a workaround unless the headboard or frame manufacturer approves it.

If the holes still don't align, contact the manufacturer or use a mounting method designed for that headboard. A secure fit matters more than getting the headboard attached quickly.

How can you reduce headboard movement against a wall?

Tighten the bed and headboard connection first. If the headboard still wobbles against the wall, a wall-contact stopper or pad may cushion the gap, but it won't replace a secure bed connection.

The Krisler adjustable stoppers use an adhesive base and a threaded EVA pad that can be turned until it meets the wall. They are designed to reduce noise and protect the wall where furniture touches it.

Measure the gap before choosing a stopper. Krisler stoppers adjust from 30 to 68 mm, so check that the distance between your headboard and wall falls within that range.

For a thinner adhesive option, SARDVISA's set has EVA pads in 2 thicknesses. The pads are 0.12 in and 0.71 in thick.

Avoid applying them to freshly painted or damp surfaces.

Apply adhesive pads only to a clean, dry surface that suits the material. If the frame still shifts or squeaks, check its joints and follow these steps to stop a metal bed frame from squeaking.

Should you mount the headboard to the wall instead?

Use wall mounting when the headboard is designed for it and the wall can support the required fasteners. Follow the headboard instructions and choose anchors suited to the wall type.

A wall-mounted headboard doesn't attach to the platform frame, so it may stay in place when you move the bed. Measure the bed's position and headboard height before drilling, and check for wiring or pipes where you plan to work.

Don't use a wall protector as a mounting support. Pads cushion contact; they don't hold the headboard in place.

What should you check after attaching the headboard?

Make sure the headboard sits straight, the bolts are tight, and the frame doesn't shift when you press it gently. Check both sides and retighten loose fasteners according to the instructions.

Move the bed back to its usual position and look for wall contact. Leave enough clearance for the frame to sit without pressing the headboard hard into the wall.

If the bed feels unstable, stop using it until you find the cause. Recheck the bed assembly and platform frame details, then contact the manufacturer if a bracket or frame part appears damaged.

Which headboard attachment method should you choose?

Choose frame brackets when the platform bed has compatible mounting points and the headboard holes align. Choose wall mounting when the headboard is designed for it and the wall can support the fasteners.

Use stoppers or pads only to cushion wall contact after the headboard is secure. If your frame is still being assembled, follow the platform bed setup steps before attaching the headboard.

Frequently asked questions

Can you attach a headboard to any platform bed?

No. The bed frame needs compatible mounting points or a design that supports a separate bracket kit, and the headboard needs matching holes or a safe way to add them.

Check both manuals and compare the hole spacing and frame width before buying hardware.

Can you attach a headboard to a platform bed without brackets?

Some headboards mount to the wall instead of the bed, but a bed-mounted headboard needs a secure connection suited to its frame. Don't improvise with loose straps or screws that aren't meant for the materials.

Follow the headboard and bed instructions.

How do you stop a headboard from hitting the wall?

First tighten the bed and headboard connections, since loose hardware can let the frame shift. If it still touches the wall, adjustable stoppers or adhesive pads can cushion the contact.

Check surface compatibility and leave enough space for the bed to move without pressing hard on the wall.

Should a headboard attach to the bed or the wall?

Use the mounting method the headboard was designed for. Bed-mounted styles connect through brackets and frame holes, while wall-mounted styles use wall fasteners suited to the wall and the headboard.

Don't switch methods unless both manufacturers allow it.
