How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Bedside Sign starts with one question: will this bed work for the person who is shopping for it? For platform beds, that means your mattress size, your room, how high you want to sit and how much weight the frame needs to hold.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room and your mattress

A king frame in a small room, or a tall frame for someone who wants an easy step in, can be a poor fit even if the bed itself is well made.

We check the size, the frame height and the mattress thickness the maker says it supports. When your situation limits the choice, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the frame material (solid wood, bamboo, steel or upholstered), the slat or support system, the center legs, the headboard, the weight capacity and what comes in the box.

Makers describe their beds in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after they've put a bed together and slept on it for a while. We look for patterns, like squeaks, wobble, missing parts, hard assembly and slats that sag.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A bed that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell near-identical frames in several sizes and heights, so we check each model and size, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record, and we check the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list for any bed we cover. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every bed we cover.

We don't give medical advice, and we don't promise that any bed will fix back pain or improve your sleep. If you have ongoing pain, talk to your doctor.

We label maker claims as the maker's claims.
